List of Auto Mechanic and Automotive Programs & Certifications
Auto mechanic programs and certifications are, like socket wrenches, not one-size-fits all. The skills and education needed to diagnose and repair a malfunctioning engine are not the same as the training and experience needed to assess the life-threatening damage done to a vehicles’ frame during a collision. Different automotive programs can vary in both time-to-complete and prerequisites as well as in awards offered after completion of the mechanical program. Some classes may offer certification, allowing students with previously acquired associate degrees in automotive mechanics to expand their professional opportunities or expertise.
Generally, you can expect three types of programs or certifications:
- Engineering or mechanic programs and certs, focusing on repairing, maintaining or diagnosing engines for gasoline cars and diesel trucks as well as the small engines of motorcycles
- Structural certifications and programs, focusing on the repair or modification of a vehicle’s chassis and fairings (sometimes call body-work) or the addition of performance suspensions, exhaust or roll cages
- Automakers and professional certification organizations offer specialized credentialing for their vehicles and maintaining professional standards, which can be useful for finding employment as dealership mechanics or in displaying one’s skills and services.
